What Do I Know?

T-7 Days to August 7th

I’m in a unique spot.

We’re one week out from my 40th birthday, and suddenly I have an audience.

When this is all said and done, if nothing else, I’ll be able to say I made 100,000 people cry with me in a two-minute video.

And that’s absolutely wild.

Despite this project being a massive success, and despite the fact that thousands of people now seem to be interested in what I have to say, my focus remains the same: Stay grounded.

Michel de Montaigne, a 16th-century philosopher, constantly asked himself: “What do I know?”

It wasn’t a shrug. It was a challenge to stay curious, to stay skeptical, and above all, to stay open.

When I allow myself to feel like an expert, or when I convince myself I’m the smartest or most talented person in the room, I instantly shut myself off to learning.

I’m very good at a lot of things, but there is no topic, no activity, and no philosophy in which I’m flawless or the best.

That mindset of humility, of curiosity, gives me the grace to make mistakes. To fail. To be the person in the room who’s still learning. Always learning.

Why I Never Want to Be the Smartest One in the Room

About 40 to 40
