Proof You Didn’t Quit

T-38 Days to August 7th

You know what sucks about mirrors? You see yourself every day.

As pleasantly pleasing as that should be for all of us, it makes it impossible to see our subtle changes over time. We’re far too close to the subject matter to see our progress in real time. Whether we’re looking in actual mirrors or metaphorical ones, it’s the same problem.

Social media, for all of its many, many, many … many flaws is good at one thing (for better or worse): Documenting our lives. Our Memories help us look back and appreciate the fact that we used to be 30 pounds lighter with no muscle mass, or 30 pounds heavier with no chin. We can look back and realize how far we’ve come since leaving that job we hated, or since leaving that toxic relationship.

Tracking your progress is the best way to invest in your future self. It’s a self-correcting feedback loop that ensures you’re on the best course toward your future.

Do it in a way that works for you. A lot of people journal. Some take photos, others video. I’ve left notes on my calendar a year out. Like little time capsules about where I am and what goals I’m chasing. By the next time I see a squirrel, I’ve forgotten I even wrote them.

When that date rolls around a year later, it hits me hard. Because I kept going. Despite any setbacks, time gave me the edge.

Track your progress. There will come a day when you need proof you didn’t quit.
