Last week I published Spend Your Money Like You Earned It. A look into how I flip-turned my life right-side up by understanding where my money was floating off to.
It helped me uncover why I was poor, both literally and metaphorically. Eventually it led me down a path of abundance. I know that sounds new agey and vague. Just know that over the years, by turning my attention toward my finances instead of being scared of them, I’ve ended up better off than I’ve ever been.
These principles don’t stop at your bank account. Have you ever stopped to consider why you feel drained every single day? Why you’re exhausted, even when the hardest thing you did was walk to your car?
How we spend our energy is the same principle as how we spend our money. If there are slow leaks we’re not aware of, it’s no wonder why we collapse at the end of each day.
The issue we face is that we don’t have a ledger of how our energy is being spent. There’s no log or statement to help us realize how toxic a one-sided friendship is to us. Or how our lack of assertion gives others permission to tap into our energy instead of using their own.
Consider also how our downtime is spent. The temptation to sink into the couch and veg out in front of a trashy television show is real. But is it serving your future?
I’m an advocate for logging, but how you do it is up to you. Grab a journal, create a spreadsheet, find a way to take note of when you feel your lowest, and what preceded it.
On the flipside, consider what lights you up, brings you the most joy, and energizes you more than a double shot macchiato.
Do more of that. Because when you know where your energy goes, you get to choose where your life goes.
I Tracked My Energy for a Week. Here’s What I Found.
In the 40 days leading up to my 40th birthday, I’m sharing 40 lessons I’ve learned over 40 years. One each day. Some are stories. Some are truths. All of them are Letters to my Former Self—and maybe yours too. You can view all stories in this series by tapping here.
